Keitakuen Garden

Keitakuen Garden

When the Sumitomo family moved to the area, they spent about ten years creating this Rinsen-kaiyushiki garden (stroll garden with pathways going through the forest and around the pond) at the same time as the residence was built. The garden was designed and built by Jihei Ogawa, known as Ueji, one of the most prominent landgardeners of the time. The garden is built featuring a central island in the midst of a large pond and artificial hills in three directions to create a landscape full of variety with promenades, stepping stones, bridges, tea ceremony houses, and small arbors scattered around. The area of this large garden is 19,800 square meters all covered with deep greenery, and the quiet elegance of the famous trees and stones envelope the visitor in a timeless aura.
